About the course

Ableism shows up in early childhood in quiet, everyday ways, in what we praise, what we worry about, what we label as “delay” or “challenging behaviour,” and whose needs get treated as problems to fix. This short course helps early years educators recognise ableism and neuronormativity in practice, and develop more affirming, relational approaches that protect children’s dignity. You will explore how “normal” gets constructed through routines, expectations, language, and assessment, and how this can shape environments, interactions, and referrals. Alongside practical reflection tools, you will leave with concrete shifts you can make immediately: strength-based language, more inclusive observation habits, and small environmental and relational changes that reduce harm and widen belonging.
